MIMRO is the Medical Imaging Metadata Registry of Ontario. MIMRO was designed and built by Radiologists Bruce Gray, MD and Timothy Dowdell, MD. There is considerable concern about the growth in medical imaging over the past several decades. While the radiation dose to a particular patient may be small and the benefits associated with that image potentially life saving, the overall increase in use may lead to a small increase in risk at the population level. The only way to demonstrate a decrease in population level exposure, and hence a decrease in potential risk, is to measure and track radiation exposure for distinct patient populations based on geographic area.

Exposure to radiation dose varies by modality and the particular protocol, or type of image, that is taken. There are three sources, or modalities, that are of greatest concern: computed tomography, nuclear medicine and interventional radiology.
